His Holiness the Dalai Lama brought a message of compassion to Indianapolis

On Saturday, June 25, His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave a public talk at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on the State Fairgrounds. We were honored and humbled that His Holiness agreed to visit Indianapolis to present this talk. The Coliseum was filled to capacity, with approximately 6,500 people attending.

The Indiana Buddhist Center is pleased and very fortunate to have partnered with the Center for Interfaith Cooperation and Compassionate Indy to host this event. Our three organizations joined together to support the work of the Dalai Lama to share his inspirational message of compassion and peace. The talk brought into focus the need for love and compassion as the moral fabric of world peace, and the ability for each of us to see ourselves as members of the human family without regard for race, religion or political affiliation.

Geshe Jinpa Sonam, the Spiritual Director of the Indiana Buddhist Center, in preparation for the talk, said of the Dalai Lama’s visit:
Why ask the Dalai Lama to give a talk here? We believe that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the embodiment of compassion. In his talks, he makes it clear how important it is that all people, and all beings in the universe, are brought together in unity and peace. When individuals practice compassion, then it is possible for universal peace to be achieved. His Holiness teaches how we can each develop compassion. Many people who understand the importance of this will want to attend his talk, and we feel that it is important that they have this opportunity to hear him. The Center for Interfaith Cooperation has been working to make this vision of compassion a reality, and the people at Compassionate Indy are also committed to this goal. The Indiana Buddhist Center is working together with these two organizations to host His Holiness in Indianapolis to support his message of compassion and peace.

In conjunction with the public talk, the partner organizations also worked to raise awareness for projects of compassion, including the Compassionate Communities initiative. On his previous visit to Indianapolis in May 2010, over 10,000 people came to hear the Dalai Lama speak, making it the largest interfaith gathering ever to occur in the city. In 2010, his talk helped to bring awareness to the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, which helped that organization reach its goal of bringing hundreds of thousands of meals to people in need.
